Oral cancer typically begins as an asymptomatic process, making it difficult to detect without a professional exam. Several factors contribute to the development of oral cancer, with the most common being tobacco use, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

Lifestyle choices, including poor diet and prolonged sun exposure, can also play a role. In some cases, oral cancer may develop due to the presence of oral HPV (Human Papillomavirus).

What Are the Signs of Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer can manifest in various forms, including:

• Red or white patches on the gums, tongue, or the floor of the mouth.

• Sores that don’t heal

• Thick, white or gray lesions

• Lumps or swelling in the mouth or neck areas

What Is an Oral Cancer Exam?

An oral cancer exam is a thorough examination to check for signs of abnormal tissue in the mouth, throat, and surrounding areas. The dentist will visually inspect the oral cavity and palpate (feel) the face, glands, and neck for unusual lumps.

Advanced tools, like digital X-rays laser technology, can also be used to detect changes beneath the surface that are not immediately visible.

If any abnormalities are detected, your dentist will create a diagnostic plan to further investigate the issue.

In some cases, if the initial findings are inconclusive or require more in-depth analysis, a biopsy may be recommended. It helps evaluate the exact stage and grade of the lesion, guiding the next steps in treatment.

How Often Should You Get an Oral Cancer Exam?

We recommend a dedicated oral cancer exam at least once a year. During regular bi-annual check-ups, your dentist will also check for any signs of abnormalities, but an annual screening ensures thorough monitoring of your oral health.
