Inlays & Onlays
When a tooth has significant damage but still has healthy structure remaining, a full crown may be unnecessary. Inlays and onlays offer a conservative, precise way to restore strength, function, and appearance while preserving more of your natural tooth.
At Hi-Tech Family Dentistry, we provide beautifully crafted restorations using advanced same-day technology for efficient, comfortable care.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom restorations that repair teeth affected by decay, fractures, or large failing fillings. They are made from porcelain and composite resin, and are permanently bonded to the tooth.
- An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth, restoring damage contained inside the chewing surface.
- An onlay extends further, covering one or more chewing cusps and is sometimes called a partial crown.
Both options strengthen the tooth while preserving more natural structure than a traditional crown. They also look like surrounding teeth to create a natural appearance.
When Are Inlays and Onlays Necessary?
Your dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay for:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Teeth weakened by decay
- Large or failing fillings
- Fractured restorations
- Cosmetic improvements to damaged teeth
They are ideal when damage is too extensive for a filling but not severe enough to require a full crown.
How Are Inlays and Onlays Placed?
After numbing the area, the dentist removes decay and any old filling material and shapes the tooth to fit the restoration. A digital scan captures precise images of your tooth—no messy impressions required.
That scan is used to design and craft your custom restoration with CEREC® technology right in the office. Once it’s ready, the inlay or onlay is securely in place and polished, so it feels smooth and natural.
More complex cases may need additional care, but most patients leave the same day with their tooth fully restored.

How Much Do Inlays and Onlays Last?
Inlays and onlays are very durable and typically last 10–15 years, often longer with great care. How long they hold up depends on daily brushing and flossing, eating habits, and regular dental visits. Good maintenance helps protect both the restoration and the natural tooth.
