What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars.

Back teeth have deep pits and fissures that easily trap food particles and bacteria. Sealants create a smooth barrier over those grooves, reducing the risk of decay and making daily brushing more effective.

How Are Dental Sealants Applied?

First, the tooth is gently cleaned and dried. A mild solution prepares the surface, so the sealant bonds securely. The liquid sealant is then brushed onto the tooth and hardened with a special curing light. Once set, the material forms a durable shield that blends with the tooth.

Most appointments take only a few minutes per tooth, and anesthesia is not required. Patients can return to normal eating and drinking right away.

When Are Dental Sealants Necessary?

Sealants are mostly recommended for children and teens as soon as permanent molars come in, typically between ages six and fourteen. Protecting teeth early helps prevent cavities during cavity-prone years.

Adults can benefit as well, especially if their molars have deep grooves or a history of decay. Sealants are also helpful for patients who want an added layer of prevention alongside regular cleanings and exams.

Are Dental Sealants Permanent?

Dental sealants are long-lasting but not permanent. With proper care, they can protect teeth for several years. During routine visits, your dentist will check their condition and recommend reapplication if needed.
